Frequently asked questions

I’m new to feeding birds—where should I start?

The easiest way to get started is to keep it simple.

A good backyard or seasonal seed blend paired with a basic feeder is more than enough to attract a wide variety of birds. From there, you can always adjust based on what you’re seeing and what you’d like to attract.

If you’re not sure what makes the biggest difference (or why some setups work better than others), we put together a simple guide that walks through it:

What kind of birds do you sell?

Actually, we don’t sell birds at all! We sell wild bird seed, suet, & nectar for the wild birds in your yard. We also have a selection of bird feeders, nest boxes, pole systems, garden decor and gift items!

Do you ever have sales or discounts?

Yes we do! We have seed sales twice a year, as well as seasonal sales and holiday discounts. We also have a paid annual Seed Saver Club!

What is the Seed Saver Club?

The Seed Saver Club is an annual paid membership. If you’re a member, you get 10% off all feed items for 12 months, and receive a $10 off coupon after you spend $150. When we have our seed sales, you’re eligible for an extra 5% off! The cost of the membership is $25, unless you sign up during one of our seed sales, then it’s only $20! To join, ask an employee!

What is the difference between your seed and what I can buy at big box stores?

There are two main differences: freshness and what’s actually in the mix.

We receive seed deliveries multiple times per week from local (Ohio-based) suppliers, so it’s turning over quickly and staying fresh. In larger retail environments, seed is often purchased in bulk and can spend more time in warehouses, transit, and on shelves before it ever makes it into a feeder—and bird seed isn’t truly shelf stable.

The other difference is how the blends are put together. Many mixes on the market include a higher percentage of filler ingredients like cracked corn or milo. Those aren’t necessarily “bad,” but most backyard songbirds tend to leave them behind.

Our blends are designed to include more of what birds actually seek out, like high-quality black oil sunflower, with fewer leftover pieces, dust, or debris.

👉 What Makes Some Bird Seed Better Than Others?

Do you sell thistle for the finches?

No. Thistle is a plant that grows in North America that finches tend to favor. It is also good for most pollinators. The small, black seed we sell is called Nyjer™ and it is imported into the United States. It has 30-40% oil content, similar to black oil seeds. It is also heat treated before being sold to sterilize the seed and kill any potential noxious weeds.

How often should I refill my bird feeder?

There’s no exact rule. Some people refill daily, while others top things off every few days. In general, smaller amounts more often helps keep seed fresh and reduces waste.

What time of day do birds feed the most?

Most backyard birds are most active early in the morning and again before sunset. Once birds know your yard is a reliable food source, they’ll typically visit throughout the day.

Is it okay if bird seed gets wet in the rain?

A little rain is usually fine, but seed that stays wet too long can clump, spoil, or grow mold. After heavy rain, it’s a good idea to check feeders and replace damp seed if needed.

How full should I keep my feeders?

You don’t need to keep feeders overflowing all the time. Moderate amounts that birds are actively eating usually work best and help keep seed fresher.

Do bird feeders need to be cleaned?

Yes. Even a quick rinse and occasional deeper clean helps reduce mold and buildup while keeping feeders healthier for birds.

What can I do to keep squirrels away from my bird feeders?

We have several options you can try to deter squirrels - from different types of feeders to specialty seed. We carry multiple squirrel resistant feeders, as well as Spicy Chips, Flaming Hot cylinders, seed bells & seed cakes. In addition, we have multiple types of baffles that you can add to your pole system or feeder. Lastly, we sell Cole’s Flaming Hot Sauce that can be added to any seed mixture.

Why are raccoons or deer visiting my feeders at night?

Most birds feed during the day. Food left out overnight can attract nighttime visitors like raccoons, possums, and deer. Bringing feeders in at night or feeding lighter amounts can help reduce critter activity. Feeders close to trees are easier to get to, and you can put baffles on your feeder pole to keep these guys from climbing up.

What should I do if birds aren’t using my feeder right away?

Sometimes it just takes time. Birds need to notice the feeder and feel comfortable using it. Fresh seed, good placement, and consistency usually help.
